Karen MountainJohnson

Licensed professional clinical counselor

Karen is a relational and person-centered therapist, who believes that growth and healing come from within you. Her practice is grounded in her understanding of the power that comes from a genuine and trusting therapeutic relationship. It is through the safety of this relationship that you can openly explore your beliefs/experiences and build insight to better understand and address challenges in your life.

Karen’s primary goal is to create a physical and emotional space that is safe for you to explore your genuine self: examining both the areas of your life that contribute to suffering, as well as the very best and most important parts of yourself. Although much of her role is to compassionately support you as you reflect on difficult areas of your life, you can also trust that she will respectfully challenge you and help you to recognize opportunities for growth and change.

Her work is informed by a number of theoretical orientations including: humanist/existential, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma-informed therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and EMDR. In other words, she uses a variety of approaches to learn: Who are you? What do you want from your life? And how can you be empowered to make the changes that you are hoping for?

She specializes in working with adults (18+) who are suffering from depression, anxiety, mood disorders, trauma, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, and any number of major life stressors or transitions. She has a special interest in working with perfectionists, high-achievers, new parents and individuals with chronic health challenges. Karen welcomes individuals from all cultural backgrounds, religious or non-religious belief systems, and the LGBTQIA+ community.

Karen is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor and is a board-approved supervisor for LPC and LPCC candidates.

Karen sees clients in Highland Park and offers telehealth.
